Today’s reading from Numbers 18–20 highlights a theme I’ve been tracking for the past several years: the Lord Himself as the Levites greatest inheritance. The Levites, unlike the other tribes of Israel, were not given land as their portion. Instead, God said:

“You shall have no inheritance in the land… I am your portion and your inheritance among the people of Israel.” (Numbers 18:20)

When I first read through the Old Testament, I thought the Levites got the short end of the stick. But in reality, they received something far greater. Their provision came through the offerings of God’s people—chapter 18 provides in great detail how the Levites and the Priests were provided for. And from their provision from the twelve tribes, they were to give their best back to the Lord. This model served not just to meet their needs but to keep their focus on ministry and relationship with God.

For all of us today—whether in full-time ministry or not—this truth still applies: God is our inheritance. Our ultimate fulfillment isn’t found in material wealth, status, or comfort, but in our relationship with Him. He is our provider, our sustainer, and our reward.

While Scripture does affirm that those who labor in preaching and teaching should be supported (2nd Timothy 5:17–18), it also reminds us that every believer is called to serve faithfully and generously, regardless of their roles. We are all stewards of what God entrusts to us, called to live lives of worship, trust, and obedience.

In Numbers 20, we see that faithfulness—trusting that God will provide and take care of us—can be difficult at times, especially with the various stressors that pop up during life. In the first verse we read of Mariam’s death—Moses’s sister. So, we know he was mourning her. She’s not even cold in the ground and the people start up again with their constant complaining. With this added stress Moses disobeyed God in a moment of frustration. Rather than speaking to the rock as God instructed, he struck it in anger and took credit for the miracle:

“Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” (Numbers 20:10b)

Even a faithful leader like Moses stumbled—and it cost him. This story reminds us that obedience matters, even when life presents us with added stressors.

Takeaway: Whether you’re leading others, raising a family, or serving behind the scenes, remember this: God is your portion, and He is enough. You may not always see immediate rewards, but His presence is the greatest gift of all. Stay faithful, stay humble, and trust in His guidance as you follow His teaching.
